SASCHA GERSTNER, was born in Stuttgart in 1977. He moved to Nuremberg with his mother in 1980. He started playing the keyboard at the age of 6. Later on he was attracted to synthesizer music such as Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Peter Gabriel and some Italo disco music.
His uncle, who was a hard rock guitar player at that time, recorded tapes with music for him when Sascha was about 13 years old. As soon as he discovered Michael Schenker he switched from keyboards to guitar and got his first guitar (from B.C. Rich) at the age of 14. Other influences for his guitar playing were George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, and later Steve Lukather and Dann Huff. Sascha left home after a broken childhood when he was about 15 years old and formed his first band with his friend Sven Amon. He was soon discovered by Sven's uncle, Friedl Amon, who plays keyboard in the German hardrock band Revolver (First Shot produced in 1982 by Dieter Dierks). Friedl Amon became a kind of mentor to Sascha and later introduced him to Chris Bay of Freedom Call.
In 1995 Sascha took a break from playing guitar, started to work on his vocals and joined the local progressive metal band Dreamgate as their vocalist. At that time he frequently met Chris Bay, who was starting to set up Freedom Call with Dan Zimmerman of Gammaray. Sascha joined Freedom Call in 1998 and recorded the first two albums with the band, as a guitarist again, and toured with them until 2001, when he left the band due to personal differences. Freedom Call was the band that introduced him to the Power Metal genre.
After Freedom Call, Sascha concentrated more on studio work and returned to his synthesizers until Charlie Bauerfeind called him in 2002 to put him in touch with Michael Weikath. And that was the beginning... since 2003, he has been a permanent member of Helloween!
